Since 2016, the Higher School of Economics Centre for Collaboration and Recruiting has been providing graduates with an opportunity to do a master’s or PhD study in China and be supported by a Chinese government scholarship, as part of the bilateral relations with Chinese universities.

Chinese government scholarships can be full or partial and are provided to foreign applicants based on the education exchange agreements signed by the Ministry of Education of China, or on the mutual understanding reached with the government bodies, institutions, universities, and appropriate international organisations.

The Ministry of Education of China charges the China Scholarship Council (CSC) with the task of recruiting foreign students to study in China supported by the Chinese government scholarships, and organising the everyday life of the scholarship holders.

Duration of study in China for foreign students:

Eligibility criteria:

  • must not be a citizen of China;
  • must be in good physical health;
  • must be a 4th-year student or university graduate (not older than 35 y.o. for master’s degree programme, not older than 40 y.o. for PhD programmes);
  • GPA 3.0 or above;
  • knowledge of the Chinese language or the willing to learn it.

 Programme terms and conditions:

  • free tuition at master’s or PhD degree programme at a KAZGUU partner university in China;
  • scholarship holders are exempt from paying registration fees, lab fees, internship fees, basic course material fees; on-campus accommodation is also provided free of charge;
  • everyday living expenses associated with the scholarship;
  • one-time resettlement allowance associated with relocating to China;
  • outpatient medical services and a general health insurance provided by the Chinese government to international students;
  • one-time inter-city transportation costs.
